Mikheil Sarjveladze introduced the training programme for release of the prisoner convicted with lifelong imprisonment to the prisoners so convicted.
Mikheil Sarjveladze, Chairperson of the Committee on Human Rights and Civil Integration of the Parliament of Georgia introduced the programme for release of the prisoner convicted with lifelong imprisonment to the prisoners so convicted in N8 penitentiary facility.

In the meeting also participated representatives of the National Agency for Crime Prevention, Execution of Non-custodial Sentences and Probation, and of Department of Resocialisation and Rehabilitation of the Special Penitentiary Service.
The meeting was held in a question-and-answer mode and the prisoners convicted with lifelong imprisonment received comprehensive information on the programme.

We would like to remind you that according to the amendments made to the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Codes of Georgia, a new, different mechanism for reviewing the sentences of persons convicted with lifelong imprisonment has been introduced. In order for a person convicted with lifelong imprisonment to be entitled to this benefit, one of the conditions, together with other circumstances, is the successful completion of a training program for the release of a person convicted with lifelong imprisonment, which has been prepared by the Ministry of Justice.

A person convicted with lifelong imprisonment who has actually served at least 12 years of imprisonment and has given written consent to participate in the programme for release, may be included in the programme for preparation for release. The programme consists of 8 stages, its duration is 2 years and in addition to the penitentiary system, the National Agency for Crime Prevention, Execution of Non-custodial Sentences and Probation and the LEPL Center for Vocational Training and Training of Convicts are involved in its implementation.

The goal of the programme is to ensure, in the framework of case management, the engagement of convicts in such activities (interventions), which will facilitate their rehabilitation and preparation for resocialisation and reintegration before the arrival of the stage of release of the persons convicted with lifelong imprisonment before the date prescribed by law for further serving the sentence. The assessment process includes assessment of both the convict's risk and need, as well as of the risk of significant harm, family and social environment, and the drafting a report that contains information on the victim or his legal successor. Taking into account the identified needs and criminogenic factors,
an individual programme for preparation for release is developed.
